Biography

Rebekah White is the editor of New Zealand Geographic magazine: the bimonthly, independently-owned publication of record which documents New Zealand society, culture, nature, and scientific research. It has been published continuously since 1989. When Rebekah took the helm at the start of 2017, she become only the fourth editor in the magazine’s history. She had been the deputy since 2014, and previously edited a magazine about photography.

In 2018, New Zealand Geographic won both of the country’s top prizes for magazine publishing: Best Magazine at the Voyager Media Awards, and Magazine of the Year at the Magazine Media Awards. Rebekah was also the recipient of a grant from the Aotearoa New Zealand Science Journalism Fund in support of a story she wrote on citizen science.

In 2017, one of Rebekah’s stories was selected for a best-of collection of New Zealand journalism, an Auckland University Press book titled Tell You What: Great New Zealand Nonfiction.

She is a occasional commentator on Radio New Zealand and speaker on the subject of effective science and conservation communication. She holds degrees in comparative literature and journalism from the University of Auckland and AUT.
